SITUATION:

LeafTech Consulting provides IT solutions for small and medium-sized businesses with 20-100 employees. As a managed service provider (MSP), they provide strategies that remove uncertainty and help businesses reach their ultimate goals.

Founded in 2007 in Denver, CO, the company had grown substantially, while still using their start-up accounting processes.

“We realized we had outgrown our financial expertise, and really didn’t know what we were doing. We were operating on a money-in, money-out basis,” said Chris McAree, CEO, LeafTech Consulting. McAree recognized the need for CFO and Controller expertise and welcomed the ability to make strategic decisions based on sound financial data.


SOLUTION:

LeafTech Consulting hired VertexCFO and McAree says that within a few months, the fractional CFO and controller company had a good handle on their financials.

“For the first time, we invested in financial operations, and it was absolutely the right decision,” McAree said. “You can’t fix things you can’t measure.”

VertexCFO performed a complete analysis and clean-up of the financials and restatement of prior year financial information. To make more informed decisions, they implemented a full suite of financial reports, dashboards and key performance indicators to provide financial insights into the company. Collaboratively, VertexCFO built a budget and forecast with automated reporting and assumptions that allow LeafTech Consulting to be more strategic as they continue to build their company. VertexCFO also helped LeafTech Consulting address receivables, collections, accounts payable and resolve a multi-state sales tax issue, working with a third-party firm. LeafTech Consulting has improved its reporting and compliance based on the recommendations from VertexCFO and its consultants.

McAree said VertexCFO has a cadence and authority about them. “I have built a level of trust and partnership with them. They are looking at the most intimate part of my business, yet I don’t feel judged or lesser than. I believe that things are going in the right direction. I’m getting the feedback I need to continue pushing forward as a company.”

Once VertexCFO set up foundational processes, LeafTech hired a billing and accounting coordinator who continues working with VertexCFO, following the processes they developed. VertexCFO now takes a more strategic role as an advisor.


RESULTS:

McAree says LeafTech Consulting has grown organically 30% in the time they’ve worked with VertexCFO, and now is in a position of considering strategic acquisitions. “We would have never been in a position for making an acquisition without the help of VertexCFO. Having a very clear understanding of our financials has given us stability and insight to make smart decisions.”

McAree is excited to have pristine books heading into the new year, and looks forward to receiving monthly financial packages he understands. “This isn’t my world, but no one has ever made me feel dumb or stupid for asking for clarification.”
